Derby Facts

Great article by Hunter S Thompson on the Kentucky Derby.

With all apologies to some great trainers, here's a great article on the Derby's Worst Trainers.  However, here are the Derby's Best Trainers and Jockeys.

Only one horse who has won the Breeders Cup Juvenile has ever won the derby. It was Street Sense in 2007. - Sorry Bobby!

Only two geldings have won the Derby since Clyde Van Dusen in 1929.  Funny Cide in 2003 and Mine that Bird in 2009.

Only three fillies have ever won the Derby, Regret in 1915, Genuine Risk in 1980, and Winning Colors in 1988.

The last horse to win the Kentucky Derby without racing at age 2 was Apollo in 1882.

Big Brown, in 2008, was the first horse to win from post position 20 (the far outside) since Clyde Van Dusen in 1929.

As of 2008, 15 Kentucky Derby winners have had Raise a Native on their (paternal) sire line: Smarty Jones, Funny Cide, War Emblem, Monarchos, Fusaichi Pegasus, Real Quiet, Grindstone, Thunder Gulch, Strike the Gold, Unbridled,Alysheba, Genuine Risk, Affirmed, Street Sense and Majestic Prince. Only three Derby winners carried Raise a Native on their broodmare sire line: Barbaro, Mine that Bird and Real Quiet (who carried him on both lines).

Here are the last 11 Derby winners, their winning Derby Beyers in parentheses, and their 3-year-old Beyers prior to the Derby, with the most recent one listed first:
